Aloha, and Welcome to our Maui Sights and Treasures Blog!
This post has been written specifically for our readers that are looking for Fun Things to do on the Island of Kauai. This blog post continues a series of articles on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai… Written by Maui Sights & Treasures staff: Athena Walsh
I made a list recently of what I would consider some of the more fun & interesting places to visit, which may or may not be on a tour. I highly recommend getting a renting a car if you want to explore all that Kauai has to offer. In fact there is so much to do on Kauai that, if you are like me, you will already be planning your next trip to Kauai before you even leave.
While you can do the tours to the areas mentioned in my last blog post, if you have a rental car you can go exploring Kauai on your own. Do you like history? Captain Cooks Monument is from the first ‘European’ landing here in Hawaii in 1778.
Who would have thought about visiting a Russian Fort in Hawaii? Fort Elizabeth was built in 1817 (1 of 3 Russian Forts), when Kauai’s High Chief Kaumualiʻi, (the last independent Aliʻi Nui -King of Kauai) was trying to avoid being overthrown by King Kamehameha.
I recommend taking in the views of Kalalau Lookout and try to envision the ancient Hawaiians and Menehune’s (first wave of Polynesians to Hawaii) as they lived, fished and grew Taro long ago.
On Kauai’s East Coast sits the famous “Coconut Coast”… the Coconut Coast consists of endless fields of Coconut Palm Trees, Oceanfront Condos and Hotels; and Shops and Eateries. Kapa’a is a charming and quaint little beach town. Park and go for a walk, ride the beach front bike trail, grab a bite to eat and do a little shopping. Kapa’a has lots of charm. 1rst Saturday of the month is Kapa’a Art Walk.
Take a drive to Wailua River Falls and take a few Waterfall photos…Kayaking on the Wailua River is also very popular or do the Tour and Hike to a 120 waterfall-pond. The Wailua River is also home to the Smiths Family Luau and the Wailua River’s Fern Grotto Tour.
Stop at the Kilohana Plantation if you have time. Besides Gaylord’s, 1 of Kauai’s most popular restaurants, there is Kaloa Rum Tastings. Kilohana is a 16,000 ft Mansion built for one of Kauai’s Sugar Barons and is now an open museum and very luxurious. Kilohana is also home to Lu’au Kalamaku.
No matter where you drive on Kauai, chances are you are going to see Kauai’s famous ‘free range Chickens”! They are everywhere especially in Hanalei…
