Aloha from Maui Sights and Treasures and the Maui Snorkel Store.

I recently spent a week on Kauai, and as I attended the Smith Family Lu’au last year, I chose to go to Lu’au Kalamaku this time around.

Many of Hawaii’s newest Hula Shows and Hawaiian Luaus tend to move away from all things Hula that has always been the tradition, to include theatrical performances as dancers act out famous Hawaiian Legends and Myths of older times…Lu’au Kalamaku is Kauai’s only theatrical Lu’ua production and is a must-see for all ages! (Tuesday and Friday Nights only).

There are several Luau packages available. I chose the Lu’au and  Kilohana Plantation Train ride Tour package.  Guests will be able to feed the Goats and wild Pigs as well as fields of Pineapples, Banana Trees etc.

Drinks are included in the price of the Luau. I ordered a Hawaiian Maitai and headed for the train…

When the train arrived back to the Kalamaku Luau, I refreshed my cocktail and went to find the Imu Ceremony demonstration, which is always a favorite at Hawaiian Lu’aus.

OK, time to eat! A Fruit platter and Salad are served ‘family style’ at your table, while the main Luau feast is served at a long buffet table. Menu items include local specialties like Kalua Pork (from the Imu Ceremony), Ono (Wahoo) Fish and Teriyaki Chicken, Yum!

Vegetarians will be happy with the steamed Jasmine Rice, Veggie Chow fun, and purple Sweet Potatoes… Desserts included Coconut Haupia Pudding, Rice Pudding with a dark Rum Sauce, Banana Cream Pies and more…

While there is Hawaiian entertainment during Dinner, once you are finished, the main Hula Show will begin. I noticed right off that Luau Kalamaku put the Stage in the center of all the tables, which was nice. The outer tables were on a raised platform for better viewing.

What a great show!

Lu’au Kalamaku’s theatrical luau will bring you to tears and have you jumping from your seats as the story brings you back to the original days of the Hawaiian people culminating with a fantastic fire  dance, featuring fire poi balls and traditional fire knife dancing.

All in all a magical evening at a Hawaiian Luau!

Note: When I made my reservation I chose the Luau & Train Tour Package. While I enjoyed the tour and recommend it for families and those interested in Hawaiian Horticulture, I do not recommend the time just before the Lu’au. Take an earlier train or do the Train and the Rum Tour on another day.

Our hostess suggested we be seated by 6:00 PM and the Train did not pull back in until 6:20, so I missed the Fruit and Salad that was served ‘family style’ at our table, and the Jewelry and Craft tables that were set up during cocktail-demonstration hour. I did get back just in time to see the “Imu Ceremony” which is a must see at any Hawaiian Lu’au!

At this time we are upgrading our Maui Sights & Treasures web site to be more mobile friendly, please call us direct for information, reservations, and tickets to Lu’au Kalamaku on the Island of Kauai, Hawaii. 808-879-6260 ext. #1.
