A Luau is a feast, a celebration of an important event. Launching a new canoe, victory at war or the first year of a child’s birth would prompt a Luau. However, the Polynesians and especially Hawaiians have evolved this great pleasure into a truly unique cultural experience. There are plenty of Luau’s to choose from when visiting the Hawaiian Islands. Each has their own style but all include traditional Hawaiian food, great Hawaiian music, and the Hula.
One of my favorite Luau’s on Maui is The Feast at Lele! The Feast is located on the beach in Lahaina where the Royal Families of Maui would feast and entertain. The authentic Polynesian menu and cuisine is created by Chef James McDonald, Owner/Chef of Pacific’O & I’O Restaurants and one of Maui’s top gourmet chefs.
The Feast is a small venue, only 150 seats. You are greeted oceanside with a fresh flower lei and a Mai Tai, then escorted to your own private table. (Most other luaus seat you at large community tables). The tables are intimate and offer a panoramic view of the ocean and beautiful Maui sunsets. Included is an open bar with all the tropical drinks, beer and wine.
The Feast at Lele features a sit-down dinner of five epicurean courses from the Pacific Island nations of Aotearoa, Tahiti, Samoa and Hawai’i. Each meal is served while the dancers perform their traditional Hula of the Island. Aotearoa is famous for their duck salad and KuKu patties. Tahiti serves their Fafa, chicken wrapped in Taro Leaf. Hawaii presents their delicious Kalua Pig, and Samoa serves the Supasui, grilled flank steak. The food is so delicious and different!
This is an exquisite night under the stars and Tiki Torches, with dancing and music that you will never forget! I hope you will find time for this extraordinary Luau while on your vacation in Maui.
