The Island of Lana’i (the Pineapple Island) is the 6th largest of the Hawaiian Islands and is the least publicly accessible. Taking a trip to this island on Trilogy Excursions has to be one of the best days ever! On almost every trip you’ll see either a pod of whales, dolphins, spinner dolphins or a few unusual creatures like the false killer whales or a gigantic whale shark. Such beautiful creatures to encounter!
The Trilogy to Lana’i offers two trips, one leaves at 7:00am and the other departs at 10:00am. I am fond of the 10:00am trip for two reasons: first, you do not have to get up early and second, they sail back at sunset. But the 7:00am trip is excellent too. The mornings are so crisp and beautiful and you return sailing into the harbor around 2:00pm.
Go hungry! They serve a continental breakfast that consist of homemade (Grandma’s recipe) cinnamon rolls, a beautiful array of fresh fruits and delightful coffee, tea or juice. You have lunch on the boat also, just before you dock at Manele Bay, delicious wraps; chicken, tuna or veggie.
Once you arrive at Manele Bay you have an option of hopping in the van and taking a tour to the quiet town of Lana’i City or going directly to the beautiful beach. The van trip is dynamite! The local tour guides furnish so much interesting information about the new owner of Lanai, Larry Ellison and some of his plans for the island. After the van ride you will have about an hour to snorkel at Hulapoe Bay, which is one of the most beautiful bays in all the Hawaiian Islands. On the beach they offer homemade chips and salsa, snorkel lessons, scuba, volleyball or a chance to try snuba!
After your van trip and beach time, it is back to the harbor for a delicious BBQ chicken dinner which includes their special stir fry vegetable/noodle dish. So yummy!
Your trip back to Maui is absolutely beautiful… sailing, drinking and a hot fudge Sunday. Life just does not get much better than this day trip to the Pineapple Island.
