Meet at our Bike Shop at 9 am on the North Shore of Maui in the surf town of Paia. This allows you to sleep in on your vacation, not wake up at 2 am to try to catch a sunrise with hundreds of other people and saves you over $125 per person vs sunrise tours. Our 9 am Haleakala Maui Bike Tour is by design to let the sunrise downhill vehicle traffic and local rush hour morning traffic pass so you have fewer vehicles on the road. The temperatures are warmer and the stores and restaurants are open along the bike route.
At our shop, we supply you with your helmet, rain/wind jacket & pants, gloves, backpack, bike lock & map. Our Maui bike tour is live and interactive via a QR code for each rider to show their location as well as local points of interest. After our safety briefing, you will enjoy a narrated van tour as you’re driven up Haleakala on the same route you’ll bike down! Your guide will point out the local history, points of interest, and suggestions for places to visit.
The Maui bike ride down Haleakala is approximately 24 miles from the drop-off point near the top of Haleakala to our shop in Paia. Haleakala has an average grade of 5% and is 98% downhill. There are many switchbacks on the first portion of the Maui volcano bike ride that eliminate any excessive steepness. Without stopping, the bike tour takes about 1 ½ hour to return to sea level, but on our self-paced Maui bike tour, you can take your time and stop as you please. Many bikers stop to eat at the various restaurants along the route or stop to check out the little town with its many shops and galleries on the way down. You have until 3:30 p.m. to make your way back down to our shop, which is the end of the ride.
On average, with stops, most people return between 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm. However, some people come straight down without stopping and they return between 11:45 am – 12 pm. Our recommendation is to stop along the way, maybe having brunch in Kula or lunch in Makawao. There are also several boutique shops that guests check out in downtown Makawao. Some people take it straight down and have lunch in Paia.
Rest assured this tour also includes roadside assistance if you have any hiccups along the way. Whether it be a question, to requesting a pick-up, we are never too far away & only a phone call away.
*The included bike is a perfect bike for the downhill nature of this ride. It is a single-speed mountain bike. If you would like to climb and are Advanced cyclists and Very athletic, please call us to discuss bike upgrade options.
