The Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) culture is a big part of the lifestyle and history of the Big Island of Hawaii. With a wealth of scenic, open landscapes to explore in Waimea and other spots throughout the island, ranchers are happy to share their paniolo stories and knowledge with you on horseback. Horseback riding tours in Hawaii are one of the most amazing things you can experience in the islands!

The Island of Hawaii (Big Island) offers a variety of fun ways to saddle up for an unforgettable paniolo-like experience. From scenic storytelling tours on horse-drawn wagons to a hands-on chance to take the reins and go on real cattle drive, you will surely learn a lot about our authentic Hawaiian-style cowboy culture. Choose from a diverse selection of beautiful environments to ride through including the upcountry pastures, the tropical Valley, stream and waterfalls trails, or the Southern reaches of a historic trail to Kealakekua Bay – complete with swimming and snorkeling.

We went to visit the Parker Ranch on my visit to the Big Island, what a beautiful place. The ranch had been the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the United States for many years, and is still the fifth largest in the country!

While you can’t really get out onto the ranch itself, you can visit a few parts of it. The most memorable spots we visited were the family homes that had been built in the mid-1800s (very old by Hawaii standards). The main house has quite an impressive art collection, and it is not what you would typically think of as a ranch house; it is very elegant. The older, original Parker house is constructed of Koa wood, a rare, expensive and visually stunning Hawaiian wood. What made the visit truly special were the people, and our guide Laurie who is a real Parker!
